"Electroshock is a crime against the spirit, a rape against the soul." -- Diann'a Loper, electroshock survivor and CAEST member

We are a local and international coalition of citizens deeply concerned about the grievous harm done to individuals by the administration of electroshock. We are committed to the abolition of this cruel and dangerous practice.

ELECTROSHOCK ALWAYS DAMAGES THE BRAIN.

ELECTROSHOCK ALWAYS CAUSES MEMORY LOSS.

ELECTROSHOCK SOMETIMES KILLS.

ELECTROSHOCK IS NEVER NECESSARY.

The use of electroshock directly violates the Hippocratic oath: first to do no harm. We are especially appalled that women, especially older women, receive the brunt of this brain-disabling practice. Since its introduction in 1938, electroshock has been administered to more than six million people in the United States alone. Even today 100,000 Americans are electroshocked every year.

Electroshock has no lasting benefits. The apparent benefits of electroshock are of short duration and those subjected to the procedure almost always remain "in treatment" for extended periods of time, very often becoming chronic patients for life, either with maintenance electroshock and/or psychiatric drugs such as Zoloft, lithium, Risperdal, and Zyprexa, often two or more drugs at the same time.

Electroshock is an unacceptable procedure, and we are prepared to take action in drawing widespread attention to its abusiveness. We are asking all Texas hospitals to discontinue the use of electroshock immediately.

No problem routinely seen by psychiatry has been scientifically demonstrated to be of biological or genetic origin. The justification for using electroshock to “treat a biologically based mental illness” is false.

There are safe, gentle, and effective ways to help people troubled with sadness, unhappiness, grief, guilt, self-doubt, and feelings of helplessness and hopelessness. These include conversation, contemplation, lifestyle and dietary changes, exercise, sports, walking, reading, art, spirituality, cultural activities, relationships, attitude and values change, and loving emotional and social support.

Our view that almost no one would ever consent to electroshock, if they were truly and fully informed about the nature of psychiatric diagnosis and the real risk/benefit tradeoffs of electroshock. Thus, the main reason people undergo electroshock is that they are denied the right to genuine informed consent. They’ve been duped, misinformed, defrauded or coerced.

Our mission is to abolish electroshock in Texas, and we won't rest until we do.
